MAY 13, 2010

Just want to say to the great people of Arizona, I'm making a special effort to pass through your state this summer to spend some of my money there. I fully support your efforts and your immigration law.

JANUARY 10, 2010

It has been a trying few months. Work, family and some computer issues have made it very difficult if not impossible to keep up. Things are beginning to settle down now. We have some great plans for the upcoming summer and with some effort and luck I'll update the site with our experiences.

AUGUST 23, 2009

Whew, what a summer it has been... Working, riding, buying, fixing, sweating and generally enjoying life.

I'm headed to Ignacio CO in a few days with intentions of updating Trailerdogs while I'm on the road. Time to unwind while touring the Desert Southwest. The day time will be devoted to visiting all my favorites, Monument Valley, Canyon de Chelly, Grand Canyon, Wupatki, Sunset Crater, Mesa Verde and if I can manage the time well perhaps Taos NM. The evenings I'll devote to updating the site...

My brother in-Law, Simon, flew across the pond to visit for several days.a 069 As luck would have it, he arrived and had to endure a couple of days with temperatures from 100° to 105°.

Back home the bike that he rides is a tad smaller than the Harley. After a couple of days of getting the feel for the heavy and somewhat more powerful bike we, Jackie and I, took him for a ride over to the coast for a bit of cooler weather and to take in the views along the Avenue of the Giants.

APRIL 30, 2009

Redding had it's own tea party on tax day. Pretty good turnout for Redding my guess is that there were a few over a thousand in attendance. Alas, tea parties are not going to reverse the trend of tax and spend. Throwing the bums out on election day might do it if good people get elected. Perhaps at mid term enough of the idiots will be defeated by conservative individuals to make a difference.

APRIL 4, 2009

mark and Jackie Well it seems that now that the weather has turned nice I could be riding but my customers would rather have me over to their house to fix this and that... So March was pretty much a month of bike maintenance and customer relations. The map you see is a reminder to me of what States I've ridden through and what States I need to visit so that one day I can say that I have ridden through the 48 Continental States. Only 25 more to go...

February was nothing but wet and cold, enough said...

JANUARY 26, 2009

This will be a short version of a long story about the trials and tribulations of getting my FLHX. Since there was a lien on the bike we had to go through the process of paying off the loan which is a long story of it own. Let me just say that Bank of America is the last bank on the face of the earth that I would do business with. Come on BofA does it really take a week to credit a wire transfer to an account, I don't think so. Once the lien was settled and since I had the balance due the seller in cash I flew down to L.A. to get "my" bike. Then I find out that the seller does not plan on giving me the bike until he gets the title. WTF is up with that. Since I've been dealing with this guy for almost a month now I bite my tongue, which is ready to give him a tongue lashing, when I come up with the idea of letting him keep the keys and fobs and letting me take the bike even if I have to trailer it home. To my surprise he agrees to the idea. Now the ball is rolling, the story now takes a humorous twist, at least in my view. When my friend and I show up with a trailer to get the bike the seller disappears into the house for a moment, inspiration comes to me in that moment... Quickly, I get out the unmatched fob, which I had purchased the day before, from the truck and switch fobs on the key ring he has given me to move the bike. He comes out of the house to say goodbye and I toss him the key and fob and bid him adiós knowing once we are around the corner I can unload the bike and ride it to my hearts content..... Jokes on you J.U.

JANUARY 11, 2009

Well I gone and done it again. '07 FLHX with only 2003 miles on it. Yes, I found it on eBay. I fear it was an impulse buy on my part and my penance (even though I'm not a Roman Catholic) is to sell one of my other bikes. I've certainly had lots of people look at them, here on the website, but few have inquired via email. Flying down to pick it up on the 14th...

DECEMBER 28, 2008

I found the perfect excuse to go for a ride early this month. Got a good deal on some used saddle bags for Thumper on eBay but the seller wanted $65 for shipping. Since he was only 375 miles away I figured I could ride down and back for less than the amount he wanted for shipping. The weather was forecast for the mid 60's at midday for the next few days so I thought why not.

Well mid 60's during the day can still mean low 30's in the morning which it was when I left the house at 8am. By 9am I was ready to have those bags shipped but after stopping and getting the feeling back in my hands I pushed on. It was getting warmer and my gear was able to handle the temp by 10am. Rather an uneventful ride down and only a few times did it get cold again, like when I was riding over the rice paddies outside of Sacramento. By late afternoon the temp was beginning to drop again and I was sure glad when the road sign said Visalia 47 miles. bagsAs I pulled into the arranged meeting spot, the Holiday Inn parking lot, I see him wave and I pull in to pick up the bags. They looked even better than the pictures I looked at on eBay they could almost pass for new... I thanked him and we talked for a minute or two and they he left.

Out comes my cell phone and I call Mark, who rode up from Alhambra, to see if he has made it to town yet. As luck would have it he had just checked in to the motel and he said the heater was on. That is what I wanted to hear, I must have covered the last 5 miles to the hotel in 30 seconds as I was chilled to the bone.

We chatted for a while then braved the night chill and went and got some dinner. I mentioned that I could handle the cold if only I didn't have to go over 30mph. After stopping for a quart of milk and something sweet to eat it was back to the warmth of the room a movie and some sleep.

The morning was not good. The Thule fog was out, multi car pileups and the CHP was escorting cars along Hwy 99. Mark and I both decided to wait it out rather than risk getting run over and by 11am we were rewarded with warm sunshine and clearing skies so we headed off. The sunshine didn't last long... perhaps 2 miles. When we split at 99 we were both riding into the murky shadow world of fog. Riding home in low visibility and wet air sucked. I arrived here at the house about 8pm and was one frozen puppy. That won't happen again... Gerbing's

NOVEMBER 26, 2008

Even with the cooler weather beginning to take hold I'm still managing to ride daily. I must confess, the other day I was over at Rocky's and grabbed hold of the heated grip they have on display on the counter... You know, I may get myself a set of those things.

OCTOBER 25, 2008

Calen on Thumper It is official. We have another rider in the family. Calen is 16 and riding "Thumper", my '94 FLSTC. Although I fear he would rather be riding a crotch rocket. He has put up with my suggestion and decided to ride it for a year until he can save enough for something more to his taste. I wish him the best in his quest.

SEPTEMBER 28, 2008bug

Another riding season ends with the ride to Reno for Street Vibrations... Not that I'm through riding, just no more runs or rallies for this calendar year. I guess I'm getting jaded to these canned events as the only thing worth seeing in Reno was the bikes. This year the point was driven home, It's not the destination - it's the journey...

AUGUST 23, 2008

sturgis 08 She let me take her photo if she could pet RufusWell Rufus and I have been back from Sturgis a week now and the short story of our adventure is complete. We covered seven states and rode 4,224 miles in the process. No rain this year, so I'm sure I'll get hammered next year. Overall we had a great time. Found a couple of nice places to eat and explored several hundred miles of new roads. Rufus was the star of the campground in Sturgis, He was so well behaved he never had to be leashed. Like always he was a chick magnet... eight to eighty the chicks flocked to pet him... Lucky dog...
